Fall is the most important season for exterior home maintenance. The work you do (or don't do) before winter directly determines how your home handles the harsh months ahead. Here's a comprehensive checklist organized by area.
Roof Checklist
- Schedule a professional roof inspection (look for damaged, missing, or curling shingles)
- Check flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for gaps or rust
- Clear any debris (leaves, branches) from roof valleys where water collects
- Inspect attic for signs of leaks, moisture, or inadequate insulation
- Verify that roof ventilation is unobstructed (soffit vents and ridge vent clear)
Gutter Checklist
- Clean all gutters and downspouts thoroughly
- Check for sagging sections or loose hangers
- Verify downspouts direct water at least 4-6 feet away from the foundation
- Consider gutter guards if you're tired of seasonal cleaning
- Inspect gutter connections to the fascia for rot or deterioration
Window Checklist
- Inspect weatherstripping on all operating windows — replace if brittle or compressed
- Check caulking around window frames (interior and exterior) — recaulk any gaps
- Clean window tracks and lubricate with silicone spray
- Test all window locks and latches for proper operation
- Look for condensation between panes (indicates seal failure)
Siding Checklist
- Walk the perimeter and inspect for cracks, holes, loose panels, or damage
- Clean siding with a garden hose and mild detergent (or gentle pressure wash)
- Check caulk joints around windows, doors, and penetrations — refresh as needed
- Look for signs of pest damage (woodpecker holes, termite trails)
- Ensure soil and mulch are 6+ inches below the bottom edge of siding
Foundation & Drainage
- Grade soil to slope away from the foundation (6 inches of drop over 10 feet)
- Clear window wells of debris
- Test sump pump operation
- Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses (prevent frozen pipe bursts)
- Seal any visible cracks in the foundation with hydraulic cement
When to Call a Professional
Many checklist items are DIY-friendly. But call a professional for: anything involving climbing on the roof, flashing repairs, window or siding replacements, and structural concerns (sagging, rot, or persistent moisture). PCR offers fall maintenance inspections that cover all exterior systems in a single visit.
