Professional Window Installation — Precision That Lasts Decades

Even the best window fails without expert installation. Our manufacturer-certified crews deliver precision fitting, weatherproof sealing, and clean finishes on every project.

Window Installation for Maryland & Delaware Homes

Most window failures have nothing to do with the window itself — they are caused by improper installation. A premium ENERGY STAR unit installed with builder-grade foam and a quick smear of caulk will leak, drift out of square, and lose 30-40% of its rated U-Factor performance within 5 years. The same window installed to manufacturer specification with low-expansion window-specific foam, flexible flashing tape integrated into the housewrap, properly sized composite shims, and elastomeric perimeter sealant will perform at its rated value for the next 30+ years.

Potomac Custom Remodeling has installed more than 14,000 windows across the Mid-Atlantic. Every member of our window crews is manufacturer-trained, EPA RRP lead-safe certified, and follows a documented step-by-step installation procedure that maintains full product warranty coverage.

Insert vs. Full-Frame — Choosing the Right Method

Insert (pocket) replacement installs a new window inside your existing frame. Fast, clean, and ideal when the existing frame and exterior trim are sound. Glass area is reduced slightly (typically ½" per side) but interior trim is preserved entirely. Full-frame replacement removes the entire window assembly down to the rough opening — required when frames show rot, when correcting historical installation defects, or when changing window sizes. Full-frame restores 100% glass area and allows complete waterproofing of the rough opening.

The Materials That Actually Matter

We use window-specific low-expansion polyurethane foam (not standard "Great Stuff" which can bow frames), flexible flashing tape (typically 3M 8067 or DuPont FlexWrap) integrated into the existing housewrap, composite or hardwood shims (never softwood that compresses over time), and elastomeric polyurethane sealant (not silicone, which loses adhesion to vinyl). Every material is selected for 30+ year compatibility with the window assembly.

Quality Assurance — How We Verify Every Install

Each window is operated 5+ times to confirm smooth function, locks engage cleanly, and weatherstrip compresses evenly. We level-check across the sash for racking. We perform a perimeter visual inspection for sealant continuity. On full-frame projects we conduct a flashing tape inspection before interior trim is reinstalled. Every project ends with a walkthrough where the customer operates and inspects every window before sign-off.

Lead-Safe Certified — Pre-1978 Homes

All crew members are EPA RRP lead-safe certified. We follow full containment procedures on pre-1978 homes — common in older Annapolis, Bethesda, and Baltimore-area neighborhoods. Documentation provided on request.

Window Installation in Maryland & Delaware — Local Realities

Mid-Atlantic installations face unique challenges: lead paint in pre-1978 homes (very common in older Annapolis, Bethesda, Baltimore-area neighborhoods), strict county permit requirements, coastal high-wind zones requiring DP-50+ design pressure, and the freeze-thaw cycling that destroys cheap installation materials within a few seasons.

Code & Permit Requirements

Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties require permits for window replacement on most projects. Delaware permits are required statewide. Sussex County requires DP-50+ design pressure ratings within 10 miles of the Atlantic coast.

EPA RRP Lead-Safe Practices

Pre-1978 homes (a large share of older Annapolis, Bethesda, Bowie, and historic Frederick housing stock) trigger EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requirements. Our entire window team is RRP-certified — we follow full lead-safe containment, HEPA vacuum cleanup, and proper waste disposal on every qualifying project.
